STYLE: PHOTOJOURNALISM – Aspiring for the Decisive Moment

The term photojournalism as it pertains to wedding photography has become overused in recent years and more & more misused by traditional wedding photographers. I believe that to properly designate oneself with this style, a photographer must do more than simply have previous news photography experience and be able to photograph an event – he or she must be able to look beyond capturing the action within the day’s events. For this style, that photographer must be able to anticipate the REACTION to that one specific moment of each action, pre-conceiving the appropriate composition of that split-second decisive moment then look for / anticipate the next…
Though non-traditional, I will still capture all of the traditional moments, from designing the family formal & wedding party photographs, making sure they are taken at the best possible locations, that all is in proper order, to my being in the right spot for the 1st dance, etc, to properly lighting all of the details…
Prior to moving up to Vermont in the Summer of 2006 with my wife and young son, I was a freelance photojournalist for ~5 years with a number of news outlets in the Boston, MA area including The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The Boston Metro, The Associated Press & Community News as well as working for many more editorial clients. From these years of experience I learned to look past the immediate story to look for alternative angles for that story, then turn around and look for other related stories going on at the same time so that in the end I’d have multiple perspectives of the same story.
